Our guide to the best beaches in Devon

The south west is famed for its dramatic coastline, with its long sandy beaches, stunning cliff-top views and glorious coastal walks.

If you love holidays by the sea then this is definitely the destination for you! Whether you want to build the perfect sandcastle, catch some waves on your board or simply lie back and soak up the summer sun, there’s a beach nearby that’s right for you! The best beaches in Devon – our favourites…

Devon is a large county and, while some of the region’s finest stretches of sand are on our doorstep we thought it only fair to highlight others which are a little further afield – but well worth the effort, if you don’t mind the drive.

• Paignton Beach: We thought we’d kick off with one of our local beaches. Paignton is just a short distance away and an extremely popular resort. It sandy beach is safe for swimming and there’s a whole host of activities to enjoy. Hire a pedalo, go fishing or sit back and relax. Paignton also boasts an impressive pier where you’ll find an abundance of amusement arcades for kids and adults alike.
• Bantham Beach: If you don’t mind a drive then head to the western edges of the county and visit Bantham. It’s a wonderful, wide-open beach that is part of the designated South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s also won awards from the Marine Conservation Society and the coveted Blue Flag, so you know it’s clean! While you’re there why not hop over to Burgh Island on the legendary sea tractor?
• Blackpool Sands: Heading back towards Brixham is Blackpool Sands. Set in an unspoilt, sheltered bay this shingle beach boasts a Blue Flag award for its cleanliness and water quality. It’s also only a short distance from the picturesque town of Dartmouth, which is well worth a visit in its own right.
• Torquay’s beaches: There are several individual beaches that make up those that run along Torquay’s coast, including Babbacombe, Oddicombe and Meadfoot. Babbacombe is one of the best beaches in Devon is a mix of sand and shingle. It is ideal for watersports fans, with sailing and fishing off the breakwater. It is dog friendly and there are toilets, a café and deckchair/sunbed hire available.
• Slapton Sands and Torcross: If you’re looking for that picture postcard beach setting then look no further than Slapton Sands. It is a truly beautiful beach and is also home to some of the UK’s rarest flora and fauna, so you can do a spot of exploring on the side.
